underground LID modeling

Hi everybody,

if anyone can help me with this:

How can I develope in SWMM5, an infiltration facility (like infiltration trench, or better, like a linear - not spot  soakway) which is located underground (which means it does not receive rainfall itself but only runoff is directed into it).

Thank you in advance.

  • I think you can do the folllowing:

    1. Have a Subcatchment with 100 percent coverage of your LID

    2. Have the Subcatchment use a zero rainfall time series

    3. Connect to the Subcatchment with  a trench to an upstream Subcatchment with Runoff

I hope this works for you.

I found a reference (for me)

    • Thank you very much Robert.

Yes, it is a promising option. However, it seems that it increases actually the total study area. I cannot think now if this can cause any side effect to the calculations or to the interpreattions of the results, but I will try it.

I was thinking also to use a bioretention cell with:

surface components: berm height=0, vegetation volume fraction=0, surface roughness=0, surface slope=the actual slope.

      soil components: thicjness=12 or 15 mm, porosity=0, field capacity=0, wilting point=0, conductivity=0, conductivity slope=0 and, suction head=0

storage components: thickness=selected by design, as well as the rest of these properties

underdrain components: also selected by design.

      OR

      an infiltration trench with:

surface components: berm height=0, vegetation volume fraction=0, surface roughness=0, surface slope=the actual slope.

storage components: thickness=selected by design, as well as the rest of these properties

underdrain components: also selected by design.

The difference between these two options (bioretention cell and infiltration trench) is the soil component which is missing from the second case.

I cannot think also now if these properties can isolate the LID components from receiving direct rainfall, and how the rest of the calculations will be affected. For example, these properties should not allow much of evaporation (if there is any at all) from the LID components. If by experience you can have any comment about all these, I will be greatefull to know.

      Thank you very much again.
