LID Quality Performance

I have found the following notation in SWMM manual:

"Although some LID practices can also provide significant pollutant reduction benefits, at this time SWMM only models their hydrologic performance.

Does it means that, we can not use SWMM to evaluate LID Quality Performance ?

  • An example SWALE LID model with TN and a BMP  3293148535?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024
  • Hi Michele,

You can easily use the treatment functions at BMP's to treatment TKN and Nitrogen species so if you want to link the treatment to BMP inside of an LID, I think that would work.  It would help if i made an example for you.

  • HI:

I am looking for some help with modeling the breakdown of TKN and/or NO3- using SWMM5. Has anyone done this, or something similar before? If so, your input would be appreciated.

    Thanks- Michelle

  •

That would be fantastic. I am very new to SWMM5, but attempting to model the breakdown of TKN and NO3- in a bioretention cell. Thank you so much for your help.

I have a very generic model at this stage which I have derived from Lucas, W., 2010, "Design of Integrated Bioinfiltration-detention Urban Retrofits with Design Storm and Continuous Simulation Methods". Here the author is using storage unit nodes to represent each layer of the bio-cell, and these are connected by an orifice. However, the author is modeling hydraulic performance, and I am not sure the storage units would suit my purposes of assessing nitrogen reduction. Would it be wise to choose to use subcatchments instead of nodes, or vice versa? Please see the model I derived (the first document) and the an example of the layout the author above used (attachment 2).

  • Hi Michele, Let me make an example of TN modeling with TN reduction in SWMM 5.
  • Bahareh:

I am wondering the same thing; only I am trying to model nitrogen reduction using SWMM5. I have heard it is possible to model this, but I am stumped. Did you have any luck finding the answer to your question?

  • I mean:

Does SWMM model subcatchment water Quality improvment when we  added an LID?

I have added an LID, but the basin's TSS (mg/l) increased?!

the TSS (kg) in subcatchments was decreased?

    Is this reasonable?

  • Hi, You can use the treatment equations for water quality constituents in a  LID.  I will show you an example.
