Gates, valves and deposits.

How I can simulate a valve or gate between two channels? I've tried but the program throws an error that says the orifice can connect only from a tank or reservoir. (I am using an orifice because it is what has been suggested in old discussions in this blog).

My goal is to simulate the system with the topology shown below:

A main reservoir pipe feeding a divider, from the divider 4 valves allow flow to four empty tanks of different sizes and finally the water goes to an outfall.

  • I realized that it my problem can be solved if I run a Dynamic Wave simulation. But the continuity error is huge (35%). What can I do to solve it?

    • I would suggest lowering the time step and use a storage nodes at point where the four orifices diverge.  Here is how you make a divider in the dynamic solution

but it might be difficult to have more than two:

      1. Have one divider connect to a downstream divider to have more  than one outlet from one node

  • Thank you Bob, it works!

Is it possible to create a divider with more than 2 outputs?

I want to distribute the flow of one pipe in 4 different pipes.

  • Hi,

You can have an orifice between two manholes in
SWMM 5 as in this image, are you using the kinematic wave or dynamic wave solution?
