Highway drainage modeling

Good evening sir!

I'm trying to recreate a highway drainage system model composed of box culvert and gutter.  My problem is I do not know how can I model it such that the profile plot will show that if the depth of water exceeds the maximum depth, water will overflow into the road.

How can i make it such that the gutter will not overlap with the box culvert? The gutter should be placed on the side not directly on top of the culvert.

Here is the cross section of the drainage system. please refer to Drawing 1. Thanks!

  • Links in SWMM 5 are prismatic or have the same shape and depth the whole length. If you think the 0.03 increase in depth is important you can add a node in the middle of the node with two different size culverts on each side or use a average depth such as 1.665 for the link,

I do think the uncertainty in the culvert diameter is small compared to the other uncertainties in your model.

    • okay sir. i'll follow you advice. thank you very much!

  • I have another problem sir. The maximum depth of the box culvert varies from node to node.  for example on one node the maximum depth of the culvert is 1.65 but when it reaches the next node, the max depth should already be 1.68 due to the constant elevation of the road but varying invert elevation. This means the max depth increases linearly from one node to another. How can I model it? Thanks!

  • You can try using a storage node so that when the depth is above the top of the culvert the flow goes into gutter.  I hope this helps but I am having trouble visually the system.

    • The problem, as you can see from the drawing,  is that the inlet is at the same level as the top of the culvert. And the inlet is an ordinary one where no dual outlets are present. So i don't know if it really is a dual drainage system.
